CPSC Delivers the ABC’s of Toy Safety

"As gift-givers shop for that perfect toy this holiday season, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is emphasizing the importance of shopping safely. Knowing your ABC’s of toy safety will make for happy holidays: (A) awareness, and knowing the (B) benefits, for (C) consumers – (Awareness Benefits Consumers).

Awareness is not only knowing there is a CPSC and what the agency does to protect consumers but also being aware of what poses the greatest risks. The leading causes of toy-related fatalities include choking and aspiration of toy parts."

Lead in paint forces recall of duck-handled children's umbrellas

"A children's umbrella manufactured by a company in Oakville, Ont., is being recalled because of lead.

The yellow umbrella with a duck handle is being recalled by A.C.I. Accessory Concepts Inc. in conjunction with Health Canada.

The yellow colour used on the product contains lead in excess of allowable levels under the Canadian Hazardous Products Act. No injuries or illness have been reported

Hobby Lobby Stores Recalls Halloween-Themed


"This recall involves all 2007 Halloween-themed baskets with item number 5464201. The item number is located next to the price on the paper hangtag on the handle. The plastic baskets are either black or orange with two carrying handles. An emblem of a witch, bat or pumpkin is attached to each side of the handle. The baskets measure 3 inches wide by 6 inches long by 4 ½ inches deep."

Kirin Beverage to Recall 400,000 Bottles of Lemon Drink

"Kirin Holdings Co.'s Kirin Beverage unit said yesterday it will recall 400,000 bottles of lemon drink because the company found fungus in some of the products.

The fungus doesn't cause health problems, Kirin Beverage said in a press release posted on its Web Site, without giving further details. The product is based on lemon peel marinated in beer and flavored with honey."

Hunter Fan recalls humidifiers

"The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday a voluntary recall of 84,000 Hunter Fan Co. warm mist humidifiers.

Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The reason for the recall is water used in the humidifier can leak into the unit's electrical compartment, posing a fire hazard."

"On certain pickup trucks equipped with an 8.1L V8 engine, the crankshaft position can operate intermittently or fail completely. If the sensor operates intermittently, the SES light may illuminate and the vehicle may run rough. The engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or after a cool down period. If the sensor becomes completely inoperative, the engine will quit running and will not re-start. Either of these failures can increase the risk of a crash."

Canadian Food Inspection Agency expands beef recall

"Canada's food inspection agency expanded its public warning not to eat certain beef products distributed by Ranchers Beef Ltd. because of possible E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria contamination.

On Tuesday the Canadian Food Inspection Agency expanded its initial recall of beef product distributed by the Alberta-based producer to various retail outlets including Canora AG Foods in southern Saskatchewan between June 12 and Aug. 2 inclusive."
